Another communication tool that can be used in the classroom to help a student with a learning disability is the Macaw 5. The Macaw 5 is a communication device used by people who do not have functional speech and also used by people who do not have the ability to spell the messages they want to communicate. It has a slight resemblance of the appearance of an Ipad in regards to shape and size. There are up to 32 different levels/pages of which contain iconic keys that can hold a message within them. A person with audible speech records desired messages into the Macaw and by selecting an image, a message is spoken. Likewise, a number of keys can be selected to form sentences. The Macaw 5 “can be used to support speech or move the child more quickly to higher levels of language complexity.”
Some children and/or adults who may benefit from the MACAW or other Augmentative and Alternative Communication devices (ACC) include people who have Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Autism, Developmental Delay, Developmental Apraxia of Speech (DAS), Acquired Brain Injury or a stroke. If a student does not have a specific learning disability, they may solely have delays that require such a device to supplement existing speech or replace speech that is not functional. Not only can students who use the MACAW directly push a button to express what they want to say, but they can also use a host of switch scanning techniques such as using their voice to “scan” what they want to say, or they can use the Morse Code application.
