Article templates
You can use our templates to help you structure and format your manuscript in the Royal Society of Chemistry style. The templates will give you an idea of length and layout of the article; however all articles are professionally edited and typeset to our house style, so the final article will look different to the template. For further guidance on writing your article and preparing electronic supplementary information (ESI) see our guidelines for preparing your article.
For most of our journals the use of the template is optional; however, you must use the Communication template for preparing Communications to ChemComm and Catalysis Science & Technology. For communications, use the Communication template; for all other article types (including reviews and Edge articles), use the article template. Please note that Faraday Discussions uses a single column format so it will look different to the tempate.

Please consult our template user guide for help when using our Microsoft Word templates.
Microsoft Word templates
LaTeX templates
If using the LaTeX template, please provide us with both the native files and a PDF file of your manuscript including all of your figures (as this format is the most accessible to our reviewers). Please note as part of the publishing process, articles are converted to a different format for professional typesetting.
Overleaf
We host our LaTeX templates with Overleaf, an authoring tool that helps collaborators easily prepare and edit their manuscripts with realtime format previewing, easy document sharing and collaboration, and user support and LaTeX help.
We also host our PCCP LaTeX template and Soft Matter LaTex template with Overleaf, which have the additional benefit of a quick and simple one-click submission process.
Find out more about our partnership with Overleaf on the PCCP homepage or Soft Matter homepage.
Referencing templates: Endnote style files
You can automatically format references from your Endnote citation manager using our style files. Files are compatible with both Windows and Macintosh.
Chemical structure templates
Use our templates to produce clear chemical structures in ChemDraw. This will allow you to optimise the layout for the page dimensions of our journals.
Language editing service
We often receive requests from individuals who want to communicate their research more clearly and effectively, and improve the standard and style of their written work when preparing for submission.
If you would like professional guidance before you start the submission process, our native English speaking subject experts can work with you to improve the clarity of the research described in your manuscript by correcting grammatical errors, improving scientific expression, and addressing any other problems with the language.
We can’t promise that using the service will guarantee acceptance of your manuscript – that decision is governed by the acceptance criteria of the specific journal, and by the quality of the scientific content. But the language editing service can make sure that your research is clearly communicated and presented.

Proof Central
Authors of articles accepted for publication can receive their proofs through Proof Central, a system which gives authors flexibility on how to supply their proof corrections, and provides a faster, easier way to correct their article. Proof Central allows authors to carry out the following:
- Apply corrections directly to the text of the HTML version of their article using the insert/delete functions
- Provide instructions on any corrections required to figures, schemes, MathType equations and table formats
- Directly edit table contents and footnotes
- Upload revised figures and schemes with comments
- View and answer the editor’s queries in context
- Download a PDF version of the proof
- Download a summary of all the corrections made or requested
The corresponding author will receive a link to access the proof; they are strongly encouraged to share this with their co-authors so that all authors can review the article. There is a systematic guide on how to use Proof Central available via the help button in the top right-hand corner of the web page.
Authors do not need to make all corrections in one go; they can save the corrections and return later to complete them. Authors can make corrections using a range of editing and formatting tools, easily accessible in the Proof Central interface.
Alternatively, authors can still supply proof corrections by annotating the PDF and uploading this version to the Proof Central website for an editor to apply the corrections on their behalf.
After submitting corrections, it will not be possible to re-access the system to make any further changes.
Proof central provides authors with a user-friendly interface to help them manage their proofs and corrections. We look forward to receiving your feedback.

One of the most intimidating steps of self-publishing is designing the book that you’ve worked so long and hard to write. Some authors think about the way their finished product might look long before their book is finished, while others will not think about it until it becomes absolutely necessary. Whatever your starting point, this article will give you the resources necessary to get your book noticed, bought, and read.
Book design includes not only the graphic design of the front and back cover, but also the layout and typographic design of every page within your book. So it is the responsibility of your book designer (or you, if you choose to design your book yourself) to ensure that the details of your book lead your future readers to your book, give off a professional impression, and don’t your interrupt readers from enjoying your masterpiece.
To ensure that your book will conform to the industry standards of professional book design, take a look at the articles I have linked below.

Book Cover Design
Seeing your book’s cover is often the first and only chance your audience has of finding and reading your book. So while it is clearly very important for a book’s cover to be striking, it is even more important that the title of your book is legible and the cover’s design conveys to the reader the genre and tone of the book.
Authors who design their own covers often run into trouble because their close connection to their books lead to covers that confuse readers rather than invite them. For this reason, many authors wisely choose to hire a professional book cover designer for their valuable industry experience, their artistic talent, or just to avoid the headache of learning how to design book covers themselves.
Check out the articles I have linked to below to learn:
- the purpose of the book cover
- what information is necessary to include on your book’s cover
- how to ensure that your book will stand up against its professionally-designed competition

Interior Design
Although the cover of your book guide your readers to buy your book, the interior design will make them decide whether they will actually read it. The worst thing your book’s interior design can do is distract your readers from reading your work. It is therefore incredibly important to follow the professional conventions of book design that your readers will expect, rather than choosing fonts and typographic design that may be distracting.
I have linked a variety of articles that will outline the principles of interior design and help you avoid the mistakes that many self-publishing authors make when designing their own books.

In addition to the pages that have the body text of your book on them, books require certain other pages for readers to gain important information, and to protect your book from copyright infringement. These pages include:
- the book’s interior title page
- copyright page
- dedication page
- foreword
- table of contents
- glossary
- bibliography
- acknowledgments
all of which have specific design rules of their own.

Designing eBooks
In our digitally-focused world, many readers find themselves doing the majority of their reading through electronic devices. Although most of the conventions of print book design still ring true for designing ebooks, some of the rules become unnecessary while others could be dangerously distracting for your readers. If you expect the majority of your readers to be reading the ebook version of your manuscript, it may be worth your while to design your book with those readers in mind.
